The Future of FileMaker

The most interesting thing about Claris CEO Ryan McCann's vision for what comes next is what it implies about the value of every FileMaker system already in the wild.

It's gone up. Significantly.

For more than 40 years, Claris FileMaker solved a problem the rest of the software world couldn't: how to build real, working business systems quickly, affordably, and without an engineering department. That was the deal. Organisations traded some compromises - bespoke UX limits, a smaller talent pool, a particular operational shape - for the ability to build software at a speed and cost no one else could match. For many businesses, it was the right trade. They could compete with much larger players, adapt to how they actually worked rather than how an off-the-shelf product expected them to, and iterate on operational processes as fast as the business changed.

The alternative - until very recently - was either expensive enterprise software that still needed heavy customisation, or bespoke web development that demanded frontend developers, backend developers, infrastructure engineers, DevOps, security specialists, database architects, and a delivery cycle measured in quarters or years.

That world no longer exists.

AI hasn't made anyone with ChatGPT capable of building the next Facebook - let's not get carried away - but in capable hands it has genuinely reset the economics of web development. Customer portals, integrations, dashboards, mobile-first interfaces, AI-enabled workflows: things that used to require business cases and steering committees can now be scoped in weeks rather than years. The gap that always existed between operational systems and customer-facing digital experience is collapsing.

For most of FileMaker's history, the systems that got built were inward-facing: workflows, back-office processing, logistics, admin, reporting. What organisations also wanted - public portals, connected websites, real-time integrations, modern web experiences - usually didn't survive the cost-benefit conversation. The economics didn't line up.

They do now.

And that's why FileMaker organisations are in a stronger position than they probably realise. They already understand their operational processes. They have years of business logic encoded in working systems. They know what bespoke software is worth, what digital transformation actually costs, and how to maintain something business-critical without it falling over. That isn't a starting position any greenfield team can match.

The question for these organisations isn't "should we rebuild everything in a modern stack?" Almost always, the answer is no. The question is what to build around the foundation they already have:

• Customer portals that surface what's already in the operational system
• Marketing and web experiences connected to live business data
• Mobile interfaces for the people closest to the work
• AI-powered workflows that read and write into the system of record
• Operational dashboards that don't need a six-month BI project

Very little of that has to be built in FileMaker itself. The point of FileMaker, increasingly, is to be the reliable, well-understood, business-logic-rich operational core that everything else plugs into.

That's what I take away from McCann's framing. The headline is AI-assisted scripting and schema generation, but the more important signal is the recognition that FileMaker's role in a modern stack is the spine, not the whole skeleton.

A different conversation
